The Plant Babies Diary – we have sprouted!

I am such a proud plant mother! My babies are now sprouts! After 72 hours, the little seeds transformed into tiny plants with green leaves and a stem. How amazing is that!! One of my babies broke through the soil a day before the other. I was nervous that I might have done something wrong but the next morning, I had two babies! I think the term is “Irish twins” hahahaha!

I will admit that I have been doing my best to spoil my brood. My little princesses got the best start I could offer and that included their first drink! Only the finest distilled water until they are big enough to handle the stuff from the tap.

The gender of my plant babies will always be girls. The reason for that (cannabis newbies and the canna-curious) we don’t cultivate the boys as they do not produce consumable flowers nor do they have either THC or CBD. In order to have a plant with the chemicals we are looking for – we need female plant flowers! As I used feminized seeds, my babies are guaranteed to be daughters!

The first life steps from seed to sprout took a mere 72 hours. In order to germinate, I soaked the seeds in a damp paper towel and put them in a glass and hid them in a dark place. I checked the towel every morning and once I saw the tap root, I prepped the nursery.

Soak peat seed pucks. I recommend using these as they ensure that that seedlings are kept moist. It takes about 10- 15 minutes for them to expand
Fill the growing pot with soil. It was recommended that I use ordinary potting soil and not to use soil with fertilizer already added
Spritz the hole for the puck
Drop seed with root into divot on the top of the puck and lightly cover with dirt

Once the tap root appeared, I dropped the seed, root facing down into the peat puck. Covered the germinated seed with dirt and then turned on the grow lights for 12 hours. I have a specialized LED grow light that does not give off a lot of heat but plenty of light. The lack of direct heat is important as the leaves are delicate and could burn! I placed the light on top of the grow dome and waited to see if I would be blessed with some sprouts. I have been reading about plant music and despite my skepticism I put my speaker over my little seeds and played them a lullaby.

When I look back on the day I finally shed the last of my corporate skin it will be the morning I saw a tiny, green leaf. Excited to see a sprout – my plant-mommy transformation is now complete!
