First-time grower diary:
3 easy tips for healthy plants

Interested in growing cannabis at home? Me too! Growing success is easier than you think and I have 3 easy tips for the beginner! After years of studying cannabis, I never thought I had much of a green thumb. Knowing a plant in theory is different from knowing a plant growing in the dirt. Wanting to close that knowledge gap, I knew it was high time (ha!) I got my hands dirty!
Times have really changed. If anything, I have seen a shift in the attitude about gardening tips. All the growers I have met this year have been very encouraging and helpful to newbies like me. Even in terms of mental health, getting my hands dirty has been the perfect tonic for these crazy times! If you are interested in starting a home garden my best advice is to go for it! Get in there and get a bit of soil on your digits! It will also give you an excuse to use the expensive soaps you save for company.

Easy tip #1

The easiest tip is also the quickest. Download a garden diary app on your phone or laptop. There are a variety of free plant diary apps for those on a budget. For those growing cannabis, I recommend Grow with Jane. (It’s free!) https://growithjane.com/

This is a cannabis focused app with strain and light options that will keep your plant information organized. Forgot when you watered? Short term memory not your scene? Get the app! As a first time home grower, this app makes gardening success very simple. There is also an option to pay to join the online live chat rooms. I decided to become a paying member because it is gives out gardening advice 24 hours a day. I feel part of a community and a simple way to get encouragement! There are lots of experienced growers who are happy to walk you through everything step by step. Highly recommended!

Easy tip #1

Only distilled water for the first month! And less than you think! I know the first instinct is to water, water, water but trust me, no! Cannabis seedlings need to be damp not soaking in order to promote root growth. Distilled water is easier on the seedlings as the tap water (In Ontario) has acidity levels that may need ph balancers. Simple rule, a splash of distilled water and amp up the plant music. Yes, plant music. You cynic.

Easy tip #3

Don’t be shy, raise your hand! Ask for help! In the past, asking about about cannabis was awkward. Now, I am happy to say most of the cannabis community are very accepting of newbies. If you are not sure where to start with growing a plant, join a online growers group.

For those more comfortable in a female focused community I recommend looking into Tokeativity.
